Beacon Lighting in Wickwar
Residents are invited to join your Parish Councillors, the Wickwar scouts and Explorers for the ceremonial lighting of our Beacon to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings and the reading of The International Tribute.
D-Day, 6 June 1944, marked the start of the Allied invasion of Normandy, the greatest amphibious operation in history. Codenamed Overlord, this vast cross-Channel attack enabled the British, the Americans and their allies, to land substantial forces on mainland Europe and is generally regarded as the major turning point in the war.
80 years later the anniversary of this event allows us to reflect on those who gave their lives to give us the freedom we enjoy today, and the International strategic alliances that were formed then, and guaranteed peace in the years after the war. Less than a year after the D-day invasion, the Allies formally accepted Nazi Germany’s surrender, and the war in Europe was over.
The short ceremony will take place at the Beacon at King George V Playing Fields at 9.15pm on Thursday 6th June 2024.
