The Society was formed in 1976 with the objective to increase the awareness of the heritage of the area and to foster an interest in a wide range of local history.
Exhibition of US soldiers in Chipping Sodbury and Wartime Memories
From the start there was strong support and immediately the society had packed meetings.
Currently the Society is one of the larger local history groups in the area and has a membership of over 130. We welcome new members.
Monthly lecture meetings are held on the second Friday of each month between September and May and, during the summer months, outside visits to areas of interest are organized.
Occasional exhibitions are arranged in support of specific events using data from the Society archives and from members own artefacts.
For the past 30 plus years the society plays a significant part in Chipping Sodbury Festival by arranging conducted tours of the town and the very popular "Ever changing Sodbury" slide shows.
The Society is able to offer guided walks around the town and can provide illustrated talks on various aspects of the history of Chipping Sodbury and Yate.
If you are a member of any local group and wish to make arrangements for an illustrated talk on various aspects of local history, or wish to arrange a conducted tour around the medieval town, contact the Chairman or the Secretary.
During the war years around 60 US soldiers were based in Chipping Sodbury. In 2005 the Sodbury and District Historical Society arranged a reception party for Col "Skippy" Halloran who returned to the town after over 60 years.
Appropriate vehicles were found, a number of wartime residents with memories of the US soldiers were gathered and the Mayor made a formal presentation to "Skippy".
